What is the value of an external facilitator?

The question of whether to use an external facilitator is worth thinking through carefully, because external facilitation is not always the right answer.

There are situations where it adds genuine value. When the subject matter is sensitive, conflict resolution, significant change, senior leadership dynamics, the independence of an external facilitator can create psychological safety that is harder to achieve when a leader is also running the session.

External facilitators also tend to bring preparation discipline and agenda design experience that organisations do not always have internally.

The limitations are equally worth naming. External facilitators do not know your organisation as well as you do. The first engagement carries a familiarization cost. Facilitators also vary considerably in quality.

Internal facilitation has genuine strengths. Leaders who facilitate their own sessions build capability over time and carry the context that no external person fully holds.
